Military Funeral Honors
Explanation
Military Funeral Honors represent our Nation’s deepest gratitude.
For those who in times of war and peace defended our country.
The ceremony is a final demonstration of a grateful nation.
Provided for the veteran’s family.
Every Veteran will receive his/her proper Military Funeral Honors.
Performed by uniformed members of the Armed Forces.
Military members in the following categories are eligible for military funeral honors:
1. Military personnel on active duty
2. Former military member, served on active duty and discharged.
Under conditions other than dishonorable.
3. Members of the Selected Reserve
4, Former member of the Selected Reserve who served at least one term of enlistment.
Or period of initial obligated service and discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
5. Members discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a service-related disability.
Verifying Eligibility
The preferred method for verifying eligibility is the DD Form 214.
Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
If the DD Form 214 is not available, any discharge document
showing other than dishonorable service.
Members of the Selected Reserve may not have a DD 214
unless they mobilized under federal orders. Service members may ask for their DD-214.
By sending a request to the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO.
Families of eligible veterans may request funeral honors
through their local funeral director.
They will contact the appropriate Military Service
to arrange for funeral honors.
Military Units
Military Units will provide a two-person detail. They present
the core elements of Military Honors.
Honors Ceremony: the playing of Taps, the folding of a burial flag,
and the flag presentation.
Various Military Organizations augment with Rifle Volley and Taps.
Our Post 10380 Veterans of Foreign Wars perform those parts of the Honors Ceremony.
VFW Post 10380
VFW Post 10380 Dress Blue Honor Guard works in the
Cincinnati, Ohio area.
Augmenting Military Service Branch (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard).
VFW Post 10380 services include gravesite Rifle Volley and Taps.
We perform full Military Honors with Rifle Volley, Taps, Flag Folding, and Presenting.
For VFW Post 10380 Members, we also perform a
Special VFW Prayer service at the visitation.
We do these services free of charge. As we want every person who served
our nation’s Military to receive full military honors.
